Most trade jobs are lost in the first ten minutes, to a customer who cannot describe the problem and a fundi who cannot quote without seeing it. This asks for the problem in plain words, reads the trade, the urgency and the place out of it, then asks for the one thing a quote actually needs: a photo. The pin comes next, so the fundi arrives at the right gate rather than the right street. An emergency — water, electricity, gas — skips the quote entirely and goes to a person, because a flooded room does not wait for a deposit. Everything else gets a call-out fee quoted from your own rate card, taken as a deposit in the thread, and a slot. If nobody pays, the follow-up waits for the next working morning and tries two wordings so you learn which one converts.
